Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!
As we step into the Autumn term, we are excited to be working with you and your child to make their final year at primary school fun, productive and memorable.
The Year 6 team are:
  • Class Teachers: Mrs. Byford & Mrs Stewart
  • Class LSA: Mrs Howarth
  • PPA cover: Ms Pope (Wednesday afternoon) Mrs Howson (Monday afternoon)
Below, you’ll find a sample copy of our weekly timetable. While we aim to stick to it, occasional changes may happen to accommodate special activities or events.
English: In year 6 we encourage the children to become independent readers.  Reading should be fun and enjoyable and at this stage we ask that they are reading age-appropriate books which challenge and inspire them.  Year 6 will have a library slot each week to borrow books from the school library.  Reading records will be checked every Monday and we do expect them to be reading at least three times a week at home.
Writing skills this term will focus on setting and character descriptions, non-chronological reports and informal letters.  Our texts this term are Holes by Louis Sacher and The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.  Although there is not a formal SATs paper for writing, all of their writing will be moderated in June.
Maths: We will be looking at the topics of place value, the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, area and volume, fractions and decimals.
RE: We will study Islam and look at the significance of Tawheed.  In Christianity we will look at the significance of incarnation.
History: We will be learning about the Mayans.
Science: We will be exploring the topics of electricity and evolution.
Geography: We will be exploring human features of geography and answering the question, ‘Why does the population change?
Art/DT: In DT the children will be exploring the use of technology and on line games.  In art they will be focusing on the skills of sketching and painting.
PE: We will have the PE coach every Thursday and he will be delivering football and netball this term.  In their other lesson they will be looking at the benefits of exercise and fitness testing.  PE will be on a Tuesday and Thursday and children must remember their PE kit or they will be asked to borrow kit from the office.
Music: Explore the key element of dynamics, pitch and tempo along with a film music unit.
Computing: in E safety we will look at online relationships and communication and look at 3D modelling in computing lessons.
Educational visits: Residential to Bawdsey Manor, a trip to Colchester Zoo and the Pantomime.
As always, we’re here to support you. Feel free to catch us at the classroom door before or after school or message on Seesaw for any quick queries. For more in-depth discussions, we’re happy to arrange a meeting at your convenience.
Let’s work together to help your child achieve their goals and 'dream big' this term!
